In modern urban power distribution projects, dry type transformers are widely adopted for indoor power supply scenarios. The 1250kVA capacity falls right within the most commonly used range for industrial and commercial power distribution, making it the primary option after repeated evaluation by many electrical designers. Unlike oil-immersed transformers commonly used outdoors, dry type transformers eliminate insulating oil, adopt epoxy resin cast windings and natural air cooling, fundamentally lowering fire hazards. They are highly suitable for projects where transformer rooms are built inside buildings.

The mainstream model SCB13-1250/10 matches the low-voltage distribution system with 10kV input and 0.4kV output, featuring Dyn11 vector group. The rated high-voltage current is approximately 72.2A and low-voltage output current reaches 1804A, with short-circuit impedance normally set at 6%. Dyn11 connection effectively suppresses triple harmonics and withstands unbalanced three-phase loads, coping with current distortion caused by non-linear loads. This advantage stands out for commercial buildings equipped with a large number of frequency converters and LED lighting. The iron core adopts high-permeability silicon steel sheets, and stacking technology reduces no-load loss. Vacuum epoxy casting for windings delivers high insulation strength. Temperature-controlled cooling fans are optional to activate forced air cooling under heavy load and improve short-time overload capacity. An external protective enclosure can also be fitted to prevent accidental contact with live components.

In terms of application scenarios, the 1250kVA model serves as a transitional capacity grade. A single unit can supply power for medium-sized factories, high-rise office buildings, outpatient buildings and park auxiliary distribution systems. Compared with the 800kVA version, it provides sufficient load margin to handle power consumption peaks. Compared with the 1600kVA model, it has lower procurement cost, smaller footprint and reduced no-load loss. When the calculated project load ranges from 750kVA to 1050kVA, 1250kVA is a safe choice, reserving certain expansion space and avoiding capacity upgrading immediately after commissioning.

Based on years of on-site experience, I would like to share several personal opinions.

First, we should not overstate the safety of dry type transformers. Epoxy cast windings are flame-retardant instead of non-combustible. Long-term dust accumulation, humid environment, continuous overload and partial discharge can still degrade insulation and even burn out windings in severe cases. Many clients mistakenly believe dry type transformers are maintenance-free and can run unattended for years, which creates common hidden risks in engineering. Winding dust cleaning, annual infrared temperature measurement and calibration of temperature control systems are indispensable routine inspections. Poor ventilation inside transformer rooms tends to gather dust and accelerate equipment aging.

Second, energy efficiency grade selection cannot be generalized. SCB13, SCB14 and SCB15 feature progressively higher energy efficiency and lower losses at rising prices. For factories with intermittent production and short annual operating hours, the extra investment for SCB14 or SCB15 can hardly be offset by electricity savings. SCB13-1250 delivers the best cost performance for most conventional industrial and commercial projects. Only for non-stop full-load applications such as data centers and large general hospitals, the long-term benefits of high-efficiency models justify the extra investment.

Third, load factor design needs proper balance. Many property owners directly upgrade to 1600kVA to reserve future load. However, transformer no-load loss persists 24 hours a day. If the long-term load factor stays below 40%, equipment operating efficiency drops significantly. The economic operating range for a 1250kVA transformer is 60% to 80%. The optimal operating status occurs when the estimated load steadily falls in this interval. In case of drastic power fluctuation, two smaller transformers operating in standby mode offer better reliability and energy efficiency than a single large-capacity unit.

Fourth, winding material determines long service life. There is a noticeable price gap between copper and aluminium windings for 1250kVA dry type transformers of identical specifications. From my experience, copper windings are preferred for critical-load projects. Aluminium windings reduce upfront cost, yet they have higher resistivity, higher temperature rise under the same load, faster thermal aging and weaker short-circuit resistance. Low-budget projects choose aluminium windings to cut initial spending, but problems such as excessive temperature rise and insulation attenuation will emerge after several years of operation, bringing higher maintenance and replacement costs later.

Another easily overlooked issue is noise. A 1250kVA dry type transformer generates more noise than an oil-immersed counterpart of the same capacity when cooling fans are running. If the transformer room is adjacent to offices, wards or dormitories, vibration dampening bases and sound insulation must be implemented in the initial design. Noise retrofitting afterwards will be far more difficult and costly.

In summary, the 1250kVA dry type transformer is not an all-purpose device. Nevertheless, with oil-free fire resistance, compact installation and convenient maintenance, it has become the backbone for indoor power distribution in buildings. Selection should not rely merely on datasheets or price comparison. It requires comprehensive evaluation considering load characteristics, environmental conditions and full life-cycle cost. With proper winding material selection, rational capacity reservation and regular inspections, this transformer can operate steadily for more than a decade. If you only chase low prices and neglect maintenance, even premium equipment will fail prematurely.
