The 500KVA dry type transformer is a widely adopted medium-capacity distribution unit for indoor power distribution. With a rated capacity of 500kVA, it can supply around 400kW active power under a 0.8 power factor, enough to support the power demand of mid-sized commercial buildings and manufacturing workshops.
From years of site inspection and project commissioning work, I find this capacity sits in a very practical sweet spot. It is larger than the commonly used 400kVA model yet does not require the heavier civil works needed for 630kVA and above transformers. Unlike oil-immersed transformers, it uses epoxy resin to fully encapsulate copper windings and adopts air cooling, either natural air cooling (AN) or forced air cooling (AF). Without insulating oil inside, it eliminates leakage risks and greatly slows fire propagation, making it suitable for densely occupied indoor spaces.
Its core assembly consists of a silicon steel laminated core, epoxy cast high-voltage windings and foil-wound low-voltage windings. The standard 10kV/0.4kV version reduces medium voltage from the grid to 400V for end equipment. The Dyn11 connection group restrains zero-sequence current and maintains stable three-phase voltage balance.
In my experience, 500kVA dry type transformers are frequently selected for shopping malls, office building power rooms, pharmaceutical workshops and small data center auxiliary power systems. There is no requirement for oil collection pits or dedicated fire partition walls, which helps save room space and cut construction investment. Routine maintenance is straightforward: periodic dust cleaning, terminal bolt tightening and continuous temperature monitoring.
I'd like to bring up a real issue I encountered on a factory renovation project. Many designers only focus on fire safety advantages and underestimate two key drawbacks. Dry type transformers carry higher unit costs and produce more operating noise than oil-type equivalents. On that factory project, the power room was designed with narrow ventilation openings. Once the transformer ran under continuous heavy load, temperature alarms kept triggering. This is why sufficient ventilation layout and matched temperature control systems are essential to prevent overheating and extend service life.
