The 630KVA dry type transformer is a mainstream medium-to-large capacity distribution transformer widely deployed in indoor power rooms. At a rated capacity of 630kVA, it can deliver around 504kW active power under a 0.8 power factor, enough to support heavy loads in large commercial buildings, production workshops and modular data center auxiliary power systems.
From years of on-site commissioning and project review, I regard the 630kVA class as a critical turning point in indoor power design. It steps up power capacity significantly compared with 500kVA units, yet still retains the core safety benefits of epoxy resin dry-type construction. Unlike oil-immersed transformers, copper windings are fully encapsulated by epoxy resin. Cooling relies on air, either natural air cooling (AN) or forced air cooling (AF). With no insulating oil inside, the risk of leakage and fire spread is minimized, which is vital for indoor power houses close to working areas.
Its core structure is built with silicon steel laminated core, epoxy cast high voltage windings and foil-wound low voltage windings. The standard 10kV/0.4kV configuration steps down medium voltage from the grid to 400V for on-site loads. Dyn11 connection group suppresses zero-sequence current and stabilizes three-phase voltage balance, which is particularly important when dealing with unbalanced loads from lighting, inverters and workshop equipment.
In my practical experience, 630kVA dry type transformers are the preferred choice for large shopping malls, industrial plant main power rooms, hospital central power supply and modular data centers. It eliminates the need for oil collection pits and heavy fire barriers, saving civil construction space and reducing related engineering costs. Regular maintenance mainly consists of dust removal, terminal bolt inspection and continuous temperature monitoring.
I would share a lesson learned from a factory expansion project. Many customers know dry-type transformers are fire-safe, but underestimate the challenges that come with the 630kVA size. Compared with oil transformers of the same rating, dry-type units have higher unit cost and louder operating noise. In that expansion project, the design team only reserved narrow ventilation channels. Once the transformer ran near full load continuously, over-temperature alarms appeared repeatedly. This reminds us that adequate ventilation space and a complete temperature control system are mandatory. Poor airflow will shorten winding insulation life and trigger frequent protection trips.
